Hapopo Toki Taonga
Hapopo Toki Taonga

35mm Wide

Once used as a tool by tangata whenua, the toki shape is now considered to symbolise strength, courage and determination. However, this said, I share the thoughts of my kaiako that the wearer will always find and place their own significance on their taonga. This particular piece has been carved out of Hapopo pounamu, a stone that ranges in tones of green and often contains flecks of black. It gets its name from its orgin; Kā Umu o Hapopo (Big Bay) in the South Westland.
All taonga I carve comes with a 100% organic cotton bag to keep it safe when not wearing.
*Note: This pounamu is authentic Aotearoa greenstone and has been correctly sourced through acclaimed local Ōtautahi artist/carver; Jon Jeet—founder of the community initiative; Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata. For every taonga made an additional is carved and gifted to this cause, helping connect the local community through toi Māori.
